Touch and Pressure Treatments

Acupuncture

Aims to improve the overall condition of the patient and is based on the belief that energy moves through the body smoothly in channels or meridians - any blockage or imbalance may therefore lead to illness or pain. Treatment comprises insertion of special needles to stimulate release of endorphins which have calming and pain relieving properties.

Acupressure

Is defined as the blend of acupucture theory and physical pressure. Massage of acupressure points is believed to remove  blockages from meridians and enhance energy of circulation.

Bowen Technique

“Helps the body remember how to heal itself”. Gentle but powerful Bowen moves send neurological impulses to the brain resulting in muscle relaxation. This allows the body to change from panic (fight/flight) mode and unwind from physical and emotional stress. Coincidentally several of the moves are located along acupressure meridians or on specific acupuncture points that are known to stimulate and balance the body’s energy.

Reiki

Is described as a powerful complement to both conventional and alternative healing methods that involves the practitioner putting his/her hands lightly on or near the dog’s body. A variety of hand positions are used depending on the condition being treated and may bring stress relief in a gentle, non-invasive way. “ No matter how stressed out or hyperactive they may initially be, Reiki can help dogs become calm and relaxed”.

Tellington Touch

Comprises a variety of touches which may help with a dog’s behavioural problems, this is a technique that can be applied by a trained practitioner or learned and applied by the dog’s owner. It is thought  to work by activating Beta waves in the brain. Beta waves stimulate thinking and may create new pathways in the nervous system enabling the learning of new behaviour, in effect changing the way the animal thinks.
