Calmers have been commercially available as herbal extracts for a long time but recently there have been additional scientific developments.
Magnesium
Dogs showing signs of stress have been found to be lacking in magnesium and a new generation of supplements now consist of or include this mineral in a special form that can be absorbed and used by the dog’s body. Magnesium is one of the most important minerals and is is proven to be essential for mental health and well-being.
The science indicates there is or should be a happy balance of natural minerals in the body but that when this balance is upset then erratic behaviours may occur. Your dog needs to have the correct balance of calcium and magnesium.
When a dog is highly strung or becomes stressed, anxious, nervous or excited, they burn off magnesium. This allows calcium to overload muscle and nerve cells and replicates the rise of adrenaline and other hormones associated with the “flight” response - resulting in excitable or fearful behaviour.
Milk Protein Isolates
These are extracted from cows milk and they mimic the calming effect that suckling milk can have on the young animal.
